Lady Grey furrowed her brow and stared at Sarah Jane, seemingly attempting to process all that she had just said. Meanwhile, the others at the table suddenly busied themselves pouring tea, cutting another slice of cake or hiding their faces behind various newspaper articles.

Then, with a rather triumphant tone, Lady Grey announced “You’re quite right Sarah Jane. So long as I take my carriage to the parties and dinners, I’m perfectly safe!”

Sarah Jane bit her lip. Hard. It was the only way she could prevent the smile that was threatening to take over her entire face from erupting.

Perfectly safe,” agreed Alice from across the table, shooting a warning glance at Sarah Jane. “And now that that’s been decided, why don’t you tell me about the gown you’re planning to wear to Mary’s ball tomorrow night. I hear rumors that you have a beautiful new one in green watered silk trimmed with pearls and I wish to hear about in enough detail to make me green with envy.”

Lady Grey began chattering happily about her new dress – emphasizing how many times she had made her dressmaker change this aspect or that until it met her exacting specifications.

Kaylah, relieved that all had been resolved and that she and her smelling salts could stand down, signaled to one of her servers to refill the teapots at Lady Grey’s table and to keep the food coming, then took herself off to inspect the stores in her pantry.

She suspected this murder buzz wasn’t going to die down anytime soon, and she wanted to make sure she had sufficient quantities of butter and flour on hand to handle the increase in customers.
