In August of 1888, all of England was on edge. In the coming years, the events that set the country buzzing would be known as “The Ripper Murders” or “the murders done by Jack the Ripper.”

Over the course of 4 months, from August to November, five women fell prey to The Ripper. The killer, whose identity to this day remains unknown, was originally called “The Whitechapel Murderer,” because the murders he committed took place in the section of the London slums known as Whitechapel.

The killer became known as “Jack the Ripper” after a local paper received a series of letters from a person who claimed to be the killer. This person signed his cards “Jack the Ripper.”

Fun little side note: A “high rip” gang was Victorian slang for gangs who preyed on prostitutes. It’s possible this is the origin of “The Ripper” portion of “Jack the Ripper”.
